The history of the Balenciaga Museum
On May 09, 2022, students in the Mastère 2 MPI Fashion & Communication Art Director program had the chance to visit the Balenciaga Museum in Guetaria, Spain, with journalist Abraham De Amezaga.
The Balenciaga Foundation was created in 1994 and the museum opened in June 2011. The museum was founded to pay tribute to Cristóbal Balenciaga, a famous designer, which justifies its location in his hometown of Getaria, Spain.
The Balenciaga Museum was annexed to the Palais Aldamar, a 19th-century building whose owners had supported the young Balenciaga. In 2011, the museum's reputation was further enhanced by the presence of numerous personalities, including Her Majesty Queen Sofia, veteran designer Givenchy, Spanish designers of several generations and female figures such as Carmen Martínez-Bordiú.
In the Balenciaga Museum, more than 1,200 pieces by Cristóbal Balenciaga are exhibited in a revolving fashion, to vary the diversity of the museum without damaging the different materials. The museum was also founded to highlight the importance of Cristóbal Balenciaga in the world of fashion.
